Best Vegan Protein Supplement: Vega

Story: Vega was created by Brandon Brazier, a vegan athlete who was competing professionally in ironman triathlons and decided to create a supplement that he could use to recover faster from the grueling workouts that he did every day. Brazier is now a successful performance nutrition consultant, the bestselling author of the Thrive book series and formulator of the award-winning line of plant-based Vega nutritional products.

Vega makes incredible vegan products including Vega One which is a supplement powder that includes 20 grams of vegan protein, veggies and greens, vitamins and minerals, 25% of daily RDA of fiber, omega fatty acids, antioxidants and probiotics. Most importantly it tastes terrific mixed into smoothies. I use it virtually every day mixed into a smoothie that I make with a small, personal serving size blender. I usually mix Vega powder together with almond milk, bananas, cacao and dates (as a sweetener). The result tastes incredibly good and is an amazing way to stave off hunger and get a protein fix in between meals, especially late in the day when I used to go buy myself two large cookies every day.

Vega’s website also is a great resource for a vegan lifestyle and includes recipes, bios of their team members which include stories about their journeys to adopting a plant-based lifestyle. The site also includes tips for training and recovering faster which was the real inspiration behind the founder’s vision.

Brazier actually developed a vegan food pyramid, which is a reinvention of the government’s food pyramid but based on a plant-based diet. It’s really incredible to see the difference in the way the government recommends we eat versus the way a vegan ironman triathlete. Especially interesting is the juxtapositioning of grains in the diet where the government puts them at the bottom of the pyramid (the largest component of your diet) and Brazier puts starches at the top of the pyramid whereas vegetables are at the bottom. Obviously, meats and dairy are eliminated from Brazier’s pyramid entirely.
